Start by climbing towards Tottington Mount
The route begins almost immediately with the section that defines the day: a firm climb from the valley up towards the downs. It is worth taking it steadily. As height is gained, the view opens across the valley and the route begins to feel distinctly separate from the lane and village below.
Near Tottington Mount, the landscape becomes broader and more exposed. This is not a route to rush; pausing to look back is part of the experience. Keep to signed public rights of way and be considerate around grazing animals and working land.
Follow the ridge to Truleigh Hill
From the higher ground, the route joins the atmosphere of the South Downs Way near Truleigh Hill. The ridge is known for its wide views and is a memorable point in a walking break based at Tottington Manor. On a clear day, the contrast between the open Downs, villages and distant coast is the route’s great reward.
Weather changes quickly on the ridge. In wet or windy conditions, paths can be slippery and visibility can be reduced, so this is the point to make a sensible decision about the route rather than pressing on regardless.
Descend towards Edburton and return through the wood
The return turns away from the high route and descends towards the Edburton side of the valley. The descent is steep in places, and care is particularly important after rain. Lower down, the character changes again: field-edge paths and the quieter woodland of Tottington Wood provide a softer finish to the walk.
Tottington Wood is a lovely contrast to the exposed ridge, especially in spring and autumn. Please stay on the marked paths, take litter home and leave plants and wildlife undisturbed.
