Across the Adur Levels
Leaving Tottington Manor, the route heads towards the lower, open landscape of the Adur valley. After the rise and fall of the Downs, the Levels feel wonderfully spacious: grazing land, drainage ditches and reed-fringed watercourses make this a walk where the view changes with the weather and season.
The paths can be muddy after rain and conditions on the ground may change, so use your map rather than relying on a written route description. Take particular care around livestock, water and any road sections.
Arrival at Bramber Castle
The castle comes into view above the River Adur, giving the walk a real destination. Bramber Castle was founded by William de Braose soon after the Norman Conquest and looks across the valley from its natural knoll. The surviving keep wall remains an impressive landmark above the village.

Explore Bramber, then choose your return
Bramber’s historic centre makes a natural place to slow down before beginning the return. The full circuit can include higher ground and a final climb for broad views back across the landscape just crossed. A shorter return can be more suitable when daylight, weather or energy suggests keeping the route gentle.
The important thing is to choose a version that suits the day, rather than treating distance as the objective. This is an excellent walking-holiday route because Tottington Manor remains the simple base at either end.
